In October, PEP offered schools in South Africa the chance to win a Student Prince Academy to provide after-school core competence training in literacy, numeracy and life skills for Grade 4 children in their school.
Due to the high quality of entries that were received, PEP decided to giveaway two Student Prince Academies instead of the planned one. Freedom Primary School in Freedom Park, and Dikgbabane Primary School in Soweto have each won an all-expenses paid academy for a full year - valued at R600 000 each.
Many entries were received and shortlisted to 10 schools which met all the requirements - namely the school had to be nominated by a member of the community, the school has to have at least 180 Grade 4 learners, and the nomination had to include a motivation of 100 words why the school deserved to win.
The academy programme will also be expanded to Bloemfontein next year, and Kgato Primary School in Mangaung and Matla Primary School in Bloemside have been chosen as the host schools.
As PEP's flagship corporate social investment initiative, the Student Prince Academy helps give the building blocks of education to Grade 4 learners. The Student Prince Academy is run in existing schools and in 2011 will give 1 485 children after school core competence training in literacy, numeracy and life skills on three afternoons a week. While the children are being given this supplementary education, they are also off the street, given a meal and are kept in a safe environment. The Student Prince Academies initiative has been fully endorsed by the Department of Education. Altogether there will now be nine PEP academies in schools around the country.
Tests show that learners enrolled in the Student Prince Academies programme have improved numeracy scores by an average of 20 and literacy scores by an average of 29 percentage points.
